Tower Painting

Recently one of our crews was in sunny southern California painting communication towers.  Towers are one of the hardest structures to paint thoroughly because of all the corners, crevices, and bolts.  You have to be sure to apply all the paint to all the surfaces to the manufactures specifications all the while dealing with the weather.  We do this by taking our time and thoroughly preparing and applying the coatings then we spend many hours or even days doing touch-ups of spots we had missed.  It's not easy, especially with rattlesnakes and condors lurking about the job site but the end results are why our clients keep coming back to us for their tower painting needs.

Painting Magazine Front Cover

We made it!  One of our team members was selected to be on the front cover of inPaint Magazine.   We spend all year traveling to different cities whilst climbing and painting some of the most iconic structures in the country.  Utilizing mostly rope access methods we apply thousands of gallons of paint to elevated steel of stadiums, roller coasters, towers, and buildings.

On this cover, you will see Brandon painting a baseball stadium's roof in the Midwest of the USA.

You won’t fly into the radio towers we paint!!

Painting self-support towers is one of our specialties.  With this tower, we teamed up with Anchor Paint to use their proprietary Flexi-Coat Aviation Coating Series to paint the orange and white bands to FAA color and gloss standards.

Hundreds of Turkey Vultures and Black Vultures regularly roost on this tower so prep work was of the utmost importance to establish a good foundation before the application of the coating.  Prep work consisted of pressure washing, hand and power tool cleaning to remove built-up dirt and rust (SSPC 1, 2, 3).

Tower banding was first introduced to towers back in the 1930s to provide a contrasting background from the tower and sky so aviators could easily see them and gauge how tall they might be.  Towers are divided into bands depending on their height, for example, a tower less than 700' will have 7 bands, and towers up to 900' will have 9 bands and so forth.

How does an elevated water tower get painted?

Elevated water tank painting is something we pride ourselves in.  Tnemec is the supplier of the Hydroflon V700 paint that protects this 1.5 million gallon water tank.  Hydroflon is a fluoropolymer  which is an excellent choice if the client wants a coating that will last 20 years.  This tank supplies water to well over 100,000 residents of its fair city.  It stands proud with its new paint job and is ready to take on the next 20 years of its service life.

Certified FAA/FCC compliant tower painting

Check out a few before and after shots of a tower we painted with aviation orange and white in California.  Sitting atop an Art Deco building on Nob Hill in San Francisco, designed by architect Albert Larsen this tower was one of the first in the area.  This structure was originally an RCA broadcast radio tower built around the 1930's to deliver clear reception to the city.   We used PPG's PSX One on this tower with excellent results to preserve the old strap steel.  Turning a dilapidated tower into a beacon that shines for miles and lights up the San Francisco skyline is truly rewarding.
