As goes for a long project we needed to vent some steam and have fun. No better way to do so than to jump out of an airplane at 10,000 feet. Some of the crew went skydiving at Miami Skydiving over the Everglades. What a blast of fresh air it is to reach terminal velocity falling to earth and landing like a leaf.

Dome Painting Rope Access
Recently the crew was in Reno Nevada rehabilitating the giant dome for the Silver Legacy Casino. The dome had been built by a radome construction contractor. Over the years the panels had deteriorated to a point they needed some rehabilitation. The only problem any contractor was going to have with the job is how to get to the top of the dome. The builder did not install a ladder on the exterior or on the interior of the structure. Luckily for the client, we are always up for a challenge thus found a way to the top. Now the dome is freshly painted and could stand another 20 years shining bright in the Reno skyline.
We power washed the dome, primed it with an adhesion primer, and applied 1000 gallons of Sherwin Williams Sherloxane 800.

Airway Beacon Tower Painting
Airway Beacons |
Recently we were in Pueblo Colorado donating our time to repainting the state's last standing Airway Beacon. History In the early days before Foreflight and GPS, beacons were used as a guide to pilots during the night. Each beacon stood atop a 70' concrete arrow pointing the pilots to the next station. This beacon was #8 of the National Airway Beacon Systems Amber Line. 1500 towers were constructed by the Post Office in the late 1920s and stood every 10nm miles along the route. Before the painting, the museum asked that we paint the tower "orange and white". As we prepped the steel we found this beacon was in fact originally yellow and black with 3 bands. In the 1930s beacons were painted chrome yellow and black. It was not until 10 years later someone had the bright idea to paint towers with the aviation orange and white that we see today. Here at BASE, we love projects with historical significance such as these airway beacons and, there was much more we would discover. Under some flakey paint near the bottom of the tower a name was inscribed; Rosalie Chrisman Castle Rock, Colo 1930. A google search seems to confirm she was 13 at the time and lived nearby. If you know of a charitable organization that has an elevated structure in need of rehabilitation, let them know about us. Each year we offer our services to select organizations at little or no cost. |

Gold Leaf Application To Capitol Dome
Gold Leaf Repair
Recently the crew has been regilding the 24k gold dome of the Colorado State Capitol Building. During the Summer of 2019, we sandblasted the domes' copper ribs to bare metal and repainted them using a Fluorokem product from Sherwin Williams. This work was done because the original coatings applied by other contractors had failed entirely during the initial restoration in 2014. During the sandblasting in 2019, the gold-leafed roof was damaged in a few spots so we have been spending some time regilding the dome with Manetti Gold Leaf from Italy. Applying the thin gold leaf sheets to a dome 300' in the air with no wind protection is a daunting task because the sheets of gold are lighter than air and can be blown with any gust of wind.

Painting Towers In The Wilderness
Painting Towers In Alaska
We had the amazing opportunity to spend 2 months in Kodiak Alaska during the Fall of 2020 painting a Loran tower for the United States Coast Guard. The work consisted of removing lead-based loose and flaking paint with HEPA vacuums while recoating the entire tower with a product called Rust Grip. The tower went from aviation orange to silver within 3 weeks after prep work.
What's not to love about spending time in Alaska? On the off days, the crew went deep sea fishing in the Pacific, flying floatplanes to Katmai National Park, and lots of site seeing. The Kodiak Island bears are big and abundant and everywhere you turn. We saw the bears almost every day leaving the house for the job site, what a wild adventure we had in Kodiak Alaska.

Tower Painting
Recently one of our crews was in sunny southern California painting communication towers. Towers are one of the hardest structures to paint thoroughly because of all the corners, crevices, and bolts. You have to be sure to apply all the paint to all the surfaces to the manufactures specifications all the while dealing with the weather. We do this by taking our time and thoroughly preparing and applying the coatings then we spend many hours or even days doing touch-ups of spots we had missed. It's not easy, especially with rattlesnakes and condors lurking about the job site but the end results are why our clients keep coming back to us for their tower painting needs.
